"Echoes of Ice" refers to an international art exhibition focused on Iceland's glaciers, responding to the UN's International Year of Glacier Preservation. The exhibition will be held in Skaftafell National Park and online, showcasing creative expressions about the glaciers' past, present, and future. It will feature works from artists, scientists, and creatives and will be open throughout the summer of 2025. The exhibition explores the evolving relationship between humans and Iceland's glaciers, highlighting their fragility and the impact of climate change. Eva and Alice are curators of the group exhibition „Echoes of Ice“.

Í samsýningunni „Echoes of Ice“ sýna Augnablikin tvö málverk á gluggum, máluð með jökulleir og urð frá Sólheimajökli, ásamt akrýl og ösku frá Kötlu. Þær sköpuðu verkin á Berunesi í Berufirði sumarið 2023. Sólheimajökull er skriðjökull sem ber jarðefni með sér. Jökullinn skrásetur tímann innra með sér; innan íssins leynist aska, leir, steinar og súrefni frá ólíkum tímabilum, sem birtast okkur – eða ekki – með bráðnun jökulsins. Það er sérstakt að búa á Íslandi, þar sem jöklar eru aðgengilegir. Jöklarnir eru eitt af einkennum Íslands, og við tengjum þá við kuldann, hráleikann og hið ófyrirsjáanlega sem þeir – líkt og veðrið – búa yfir.

„Augnablikin“ er samstarf tveggja listakvenna, Antoníu Bergþórsdóttur og Írisar Maríu Leifsdóttur. Þær fanga ferli verka með ljósmyndum og sýna hvernig tíminn hefur áhrif á mótun verka. Í Augnablikunum skoða Antonía og Íris María hvernig tíminn skrásetur sig í jöklinum – í ösku, leir og steinum sem safnast saman innan íssins. Þessi jarðefni, sem þær notuðu í málverki, endurspegla sögur sem jökullinn ber með sér.

Sólheimajökull is an outlet glacier that carries minerals with it. The glacier records time within itself; within the ice, ash, clay, rocks and oxygen from different periods are hidden, which appear to us – or not – with the melting of the glacier. It is special to live in Iceland, where glaciers are accessible. Glaciers are one of the characteristics of Iceland, and we associate them with the cold, rawness and unpredictability that they – like the weather – possess. 

In “Echoes of Ice” Íris and Antonía show two paintings on windows, painted with glacial clay and silt from Sólheimajökull, along with acrylic and ash from Katla. They created the works at Berunes in Berufjörður in the summer of 2023.

“Augnablikin” is a collaboration between two artists, Antonía Bergþórsdóttir and Íris María Leifsdóttir. They capture the process of creating works through photographs and show how time influences the formation of works. In Augnablikin, Antonia and Íris María examine how time is recorded in the glacier – in ash, clay and stones that accumulate within the ice. These minerals, which they used in their paintings, reflect the stories that the glacier carries with it.

Myndin býður áhorfendum að skoða jökulís bráðna og flytur áhorfandann inn í jökulinn - og sýnir allt það sem hann ber með sér. Listafólkið Antonía Bergþórsdóttir, Íris María Leifsdóttir, Vikram Pradhan og Alberte Parnuuna skoða jökulís og jökulleir frá Sólheimajökli með smásjá, til að sýna hvað hulið er innan íss. Sermit | Jöklar er þverfaglegt samstarf sem varpar ljósi á bráðnun jökla og áhrif loftslagsbreytinga og vinna að stuttmyndum á Grænlandi og Íslandi síðan 2023.

Moments of a Glacier (2024) is an art film that focuses on exploring glacier materials from Sólheimajökull through a microscopic lens and an old Icelandic folk song Lóuvísur. The film offers a new perspective of the melting phenomena and transports the viewer into the glacier - and all the materials it carries. Artists Antonía Bergþórsdóttir, Íris María Leifsdóttir, Vikram Pradhan and Alberte Parnuuna examine glacial ice and glacial clay from Sólheimajökull with a microscope, to reveal what lies hidden within the ice. Sermit | Glaciers is an interdisciplinary collaboration that sheds light on the effects of melting glaciers and climate change. They have been travelling back and forth to Greenland and Iceland since 2023.
